December 2006:
The 2012 Olympic Games are coming to the West Midlands
Although the 2012 Olympic Games will be based in the London area some sports will operate in the regions. The games will have an impact on the whole tourism industry everywhere in the country. Two Midshires Tourist Guides are already preparing themselves for the buildup to the games. Roger Bailey and David Maine have attended conferences and briefings in order to ensure that they cant support any clients who wish to be advised on how they can include Olympic themes in any tours or visits.
You may not be thinking about doing anything connected with the games for a while yet but if you think the games are going to impact on your business or your clients and David and Roger can help you by organizing familiarisation visits to the East London area where the games are to be based. If youre interested in visiting West Midlands locations with Olympic connections they can also help. In particular they can take you to the birthplace of the modern Olympics which many people dont realize is a small village called much Wenlock in Shropshire.
Contact Heart of England Tour Guides David or Roger to discuss your requirements.

Market Forces Not Working!
At a meeting of Heart of England Blue Badge Tourist Guides the issue of market forces was raised. It was said that Tour Operators and other users of Guide Services were not getting the best service because the market was being distorted. Operators often do not understand that all Tour Guides are Freelance and should be booked individually. Operators assume that guides can be booked through the Guides Trade Association, which is not the case because the regional association is not a booking agency and does not have any administrative staff to do this. Operators who go through the Regional Trade Association are missing out on the opportunity to select the best guide for their needs and are effectively restricting the market for themselves.
Guides can be identified through the National Web sites of the Institute of Tourist Guiding and the Guild of Registered Tourist Guides. These sites identify individual guides by region, special interests etc. and the guides can be contacted direct and anyone who uses Blue Badge Tour Guides is strongly advised to look at these sites.

Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter Information Centre
For the last six months Midshires Tourist Guides have been looking after this Jewellery Quarter Information Centre for the benefit of Visitors and Businesses in the area.
During that time we helped around 12,000 visitors who have asked us about everything from Public Toilets, Places to Eat and Drink, which Jewellers do what, Directions to a business they have heard about or where the Indian Consulate is for them to get their Visas.
We did this job under a six month contract which ended on 1st April. As we are all Professional Blue Badge Tourist Guides, you may see us around from time to time, but we will no longer be managing the Jewellery Quarter Information Centre.
We have enjoyed our time over the winter period, meeting so many interesting people and helping you all. Whatever happens to this Information Centre in the future, we wish everyone good luck for the future and thank you all for your support.
GOODBYE from David M, Ann, Mary, Roger & David W.
