In their quest for power and influence, many of Englands great leaders and monarchs have built magnificent castles to protect themselves from their enemies or to control key positions in the country. These imposing structures dominated the landscape and contained vibrant communities within their walls.
Shakespeare Country has some of the most spectacular castles in the country, from the grandeur of Warwick Castle to the romantic ruins of Kenilworth Castle, both providing a fascinating and entertaining themed short break.
Day One
You will be welcomed by your host who will outline your short break before enjoying dinner in your hotel. The evening will include an after dinner talk on the fascinating and historic heritage of the South Warwickshire region.
Day Two
Your day begins with a tour of Kenilworth Castle, known as the grandest fortress ruin in England. The Castle was founded in the 12th century and linked to some of the greatest names in English history. In the afternoon, visit Royal Leamington Spa, one of the areas most fascinating historic towns. Enjoy a walking tour highlighting some of the towns delightful features, including the first public building ever slept in by the young Princess (later Queen) Victoria and a unique place for washing elephants!
Day Three
Warwick Castle is Britains Greatest Mediaeval Experience. Experience the mediaeval household preparing for battle, climb the towers and ramparts and descend to the dungeon and torture chamber. In the afternoon, explore Charlecote Park, home of the Lucy family since 1247. With its Tudor chimneys, gables and domes, parapeted gateway and formal gardens, this is a truly magnificent house where time seems to have stood still for more than 400 years.
